The first federal income tax was introduced to fund the Civil War!
In 1861, Congress enacted a tax on personal incomes above $800 to help cover war expenses. Although this initial income tax was repealed a decade later, it laid the groundwork for our modern income tax system. So, the first federal income tax was permanently established with the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913.
